Gerald Auger
Award-winning actor and director; advocate for Indigenous culture and reconciliation

Gerald Auger is of Woodland Cree descent and a National Native Role Model Recipient from the Governor General of Canada. He is an entrepreneur, a graduate of Business Management, Rotary International Integrity Award recipient, Indigenous Relations Consultant, motivational speaker, keynote speaker, master of ceremonies, and award-winning actor and director. In 1997, Gerald received national recognition as a Native Role Model for his leadership and influence within Indigenous communities across Canada.
Gerald spent more than 25 years working in film and television, including in Hollywood. His most notable screen roles include Pawnee Killer in Hell on Wheels (AMC), Soaring Eagle in Into the West (DreamWorks), Crow Chief in Dreamkeeper (Hallmark Entertainment), Timothy Whiteknife in Tin Star (HBO), Makamuk in Lost Face (Soma Films), Chief Ambrose Maquinna in Luna: Spirit of the Whale (CTV), Chief Wandering Spirit in Bones of Crows (CBC), and a supporting role in Western Confidential.
He has also played a range of roles, including a native guide, a native policeman, and multiple lead characters. Notably, in Dreamkeeper, his portrayal of Crow Hunter underscored the cultural depth of Indigenous traditions in media. Gerald also appeared in Il mio West (Gunslinger’s Revenge), a spaghetti western featuring First Nations actors alongside Harvey Keitel.
As a filmmaker and producer, Gerald has used his platform to advance Indigenous rights and dismantle harmful stereotypes. His documentaries often explore Native spirituality, the journey of the first men, and the forgotten truths of cultural and spiritual connection, such as the teachings of the Son of God as one of the first Sundancers. He frequently uses the "hero’s journey" narrative to highlight the resilience of the human spirit, the sacred responsibilities we carry, and our deep connection to the spiritual world.
In 2009, Gerald walked away from mainstream society and Hollywood to begin a personal healing journey from childhood trauma rooted in the intergenerational impact of colonization. He spent six years in the wilderness, reconnecting with his Woodland Cree language, culture, and spirituality through guidance from traditional knowledge keepers, healers, and ceremonial Elders.
This profound period of reflection deepened his understanding of Indigenous spirituality and the human journey. During this time, Gerald visited numerous Indigenous communities, taking part in opening and closing ceremonies of local and national events, including the Arctic Winter Games. He shared personal stories and teachings that promoted cultural preservation and healing.
Inspired by the memory of his late father and grounded in his spiritual teachings, Gerald chose to return to a traditional way of life. Today, he continues to work as a bridge between Indigenous Peoples and the Western world—helping create a future where our children, and their children, grow up surrounded by love, kindness, and compassion. He also continues to be a vocal advocate for the leadership, resilience, and achievements of women in Indigenous communities.
